Club Central celebrates 50th Anniversary with $1.4million donation to charity

Calvary Health Care and the Sylvanvale Foundation were the recipients of $1,000,000 and $400,000 donations, respectively, at Club Central’s 50th Anniversary dinner on Saturday 1st September.
The Board of Club Central was keen to mark the club’s 50th anniversary in a way that could be celebrated by the broader community.
Bernie Holdsworth, club President, who proudly presented the cheques to both the charities on behalf of the Board and club members, spoke of the invaluable service these two organisations provide the community.
“A great deal of consideration went into the decision on who would benefit most from this sizeable injection of cash,” said Mr Holdsworth. “We quickly came to the realisation that our communities were crying out for help in the area of respite care.”
“We decided to provide a significant donation to help these organisations provide such respite care within the St George and Sutherland districts. Calvary Health Care and the Sylvanvale Foundation are extremely well respected organisations at the forefront of providing care and support in their respective communities and sit very well with the Board's wish to be part of a broader solution,” he added.
“This extremely generous donation will allow Sylvanvale Foundation to continue providing much needed respite care for children with a disability and their families. I am incredibly grateful for Club Central’s wonderful support,” said Jill Deering, Sylvanvale Foundation CEO.
Karen Edwards, Chief Executive Officer/Director of Nursing of Calvary Health Care Sydney added, “this very generous donation from Club Central will enable us to establish a much needed holiday and weekend respite service for carers of dementia sufferers and younger people with acquired brain injury within the St George and Sutherland districts. Calvary Health Care Sydney has benefited from the ongoing and very generous support provided to us by Club Central over many years, and it is with this support that our hospital has been able to enhance our facilities and services to better meet the fundamental needs of our local community.”
This donation is on top of the combined Club Central Hurstville and Club Central Menai ClubGrants contribution for this year which was in excess of $725,000 and also above other donations made outside of this scheme.
Mr Holdsworth also stressed that the additional $1.4million donation would have no impact on the club’s continued contribution to other charitable organisation, schools, sporting groups and other traditional beneficiaries of the club’s community support in both the St George and Sutherland areas.
Formerly known as the Illawarra Catholic Club, the club first opened its doors for business on 1st September 1962. The club now trades under the name of Club Central and operates two venues, Club Central Hurstville and Club Central Menai. The club has a combined membership of over 35,000 and continues to post strong growth each year.
This continued growth has enabled the club to be in a position to make this significant contribution, of $1.4million, to the communities it serves.

HURSTVILLE COMMUNITY COMES TO THE AID OF FLOOD VICTIMS
The flood relief appeal received a $10,000 boast with a donation by Club Central Hurstville.
The cheque was presented to the Lions Club of St George at the recent fund-raising dinner held 18th February, which was hosted by the club in conjunction with the local Lions Club.
The Hon Kevin Greene MP kindly acted as MC for the evening and the guest list of nearly two hundred people included the local business community, Club Central Hurstville members and others keen to support the fund-raising efforts on the night.
Club Central Hurstville President Bernie Holdsworth was on hand on the night to make the official presentation of the $10,000 donation to the Lions Club.
In addressing the audience, Mr Holdsworth shared his sadness for the tragedy of the floods and his gratitude for the many volunteers such as the Lions Club who were working tirelessly to help the victims.
“The tragedy of floods was far-reaching and we hope that the $10,000 will go some way in assisting with recovery efforts in the devastated areas,” said Mr Holdsworth. “We are also pleased to be able to provide our function facilities here at the club to assist the Lions Club of St George in their tireless fund-raising efforts,” he added.
Club Central Hurstville has a long history of supporting the community, both locally and broader afield when major catastrophes strike. In the past year alone the club has donated nearly $320,000 in cash and kind. This flood-relief donation is typical of the support the club offers in times of crisis.
Along with the donation by the Club of $10,000, club function facilities and auction prizes, other local businesses also kindly donated a host of prizes for the night that helped in raising further funds for the flood victims.
